Taming requires a Trainer's Whip which can be bought from a provisioner for 150 gold. To tame an animal you must be next to it and use the whip on it. The chances of successfully taming the animal are your skill/2 and intelligence/6 plus base percentage (33%-lvl of the animal). You can only tame a set amount of followers depending on how many slots you have. The following charts show how many slots you have and how many slots each animal takes.
Note: your gold is reduced by each follower's lvl once a day and each of your followers give dmg/4 to your leadership skill per hit.

At present there is only 1 magic item that can assist with the Leadership skill:
 Shield of Arna: Requires 38 strength to wield and gives ? armor points as well as 20 leadership.
